would this be a case of resoldering or is fault elsewhere? the bottom row buttons work, thanks for any tips

This sounds like a soldering issue with the shift registers ICs (see step 15 in the build in structions). Each row has its own 74HC165, but they all connect to the MCU on the same line – if one row works, it means the connection is fine. Resolder/reflow the pins on those shift registers and see if the other rows come to life. Good luck!
hi no luck, i will try again when i get some flux next week.
i have a concern with the PCM5102 Module ’cause when I soldered that I did not have the right clippers and so may have not trimmed enough, looking at board there seems to be a gap between these pins and the SD card module but if not would that affect the top 2 button rows?
