    Received from Arjen via email:
    Hi ,

i was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the mk1 ( my homebuild version based on an UNO ) to the capabilities of the red-kit ??

So with the 16 leds , and the new firmware .

Can you help me out ??

    Heya Arjen,

It’s most certainly possible. You’ll need some additional hardware in the form of 2 x 74HC595 shift registers, a 6N137 optocouplee, 8 more LEDs, along with another MIDI din, and a handful of resistors and a diode.

Find all the details in the Fritzing design file available here. This time, I didn’t lay the design out in the breadboard view, but you should be able to get all the info you need from the schematic view.

To see how the Atmega chip’s pinout relates to that of the Arduino UNO, please consult the diagram below (open in a new window to see full size):

Finally, upload the RED’s firmware to the UNO, and you should be on your way.

Let me know if you need more help.
